Pick Your Afro Daddy

See now Erykah Badu is all hip with the “cool” kids. (Whoever that may be these days). Her album New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) has made it on every year end top albums of 2008 list. And the “Cool Kids” are right. The album is smooth, soulful and intelligent. I’d want to listen to her in a smoky bar, the nostalgia of some Jazz speakeasy. I’d listen to her at the dinner table. And I’d want to rock Ms. Badu with my rattling, blown car speakers that sometimes cut from front to back.

Now I’m no cool kid and I never was but I was loving Badu back in my Middle School days when it was cool to stuff socks in your Adidas’s. (It actually was never really that cool).

What I’m trying to say is check out her new stuff… But please don’t neglect her old stuff. Old stuff like this:

When I listen to this I can’t help but stuff socks in my shoes.

I Know Your Hands Will Clap

A new favorite of mine, Lykke Li from Stockholm. My first thoughts: sexy electronic sound that had a baby with Neo-soul that had a baby with...Bjork? I love this video and the acoustic version of this song (featuring Robyn, Adam & Bebban from the Shout Out Louds).

I think Lykke Li is stinking sexy cool. Even cooler is her cover of A Tribe Called Quest’s “Can I Kick It?”
